Day 90 is a cliff, not a trophy
Most people who reach three months relapse there anyway. Not from weakness — from the exact thing that got them to 90. The Death Zone, explained.
You'd think the danger drops as the streak grows. It doesn't. It moves. And around day 90 it spikes — the stretch climbers call the Death Zone.
Why the cliff is where it is
Two things meet around three months. The novelty of quitting has worn off — the early pride, the fresh-start energy, all spent. And the memory of how bad it got has faded. You feel fine. Which is exactly the problem.
The Fall doesn't take you when you're desperate. It takes you when you've decided you're cured.
The trap is feeling good
At day 5 you're vigilant because the urge is loud. At day 90 the urge is quiet, so you stop climbing with your hands. You think 'one look won't undo three months.' That thought is the whole avalanche, in one sentence.
How to cross it
- ◆Expect it. Knowing the cliff is there is half of not walking off it — complacency can't ambush someone who's watching for it.
- ◆Keep the tool on your home screen even when you don't need it. The day you're sure you don't need it is the day.
- ◆Re-read your reason. Why you started fades right when you need it most. Keep it in front of you.
- ◆Don't celebrate by loosening. Celebrate by climbing higher.
The people who reach the Summit aren't the ones who never felt the cliff. They're the ones who knew it was coming and roped in anyway.
